Shaggy pond

I started with this photograph of these Eucalyptus grove close to my house. It’s next to a curvy road and there’s nothing striking about it.

Wanted to paint something in “impressionist” style where I take a rather insipid photo and make it pop with color and composition. So here it is.

The photo :-] Trees and road next to it.

Instead of the grey road, I imagined a pond that catches the reflections of the sky, sunlit patches and tree trunks. For that a 12×24 canvas seemed appropriate to capture the height of the trees and the glimmering pond.

Started with a underpainting with magenta and purple as I wanted the underlying color to shine through whatever layers I put on top. To my quandary it made the yellow look orange and the lemon green look more sap green but those are the expected curve balls which makes one improvise.

Painted the pond with shaggy/ choppy/ intermittent strokes, hence the name.

When I took the photo its the grove of trees that caught my attention but in the end result, it’s the pond that captures the attention.
